About IBM Created in 1924, IBM started our with commercial scales and punch card tabulators. Through a great deal of forward thinking and innovation, IBM was able to sustain, and even grow, its workforce through the Great Depression. IBM began to shift its focus to computing in the 1950's, creating the FORTRAN programming language. In addition to leading the way in technology, IBM also became a leader in corporate policy. IBM created the famous "Deep Blue" super computer that defeated world champion chess player, Kasparov, in 1997.
