Storage Area Networks PDF E-mail

A Storage Area Network (SAN) is an architecture to attach remote computer storage devices to servers in such a way that, to the operating system, the devices appear as locally attached.  One of the benefits of this infrastructure is that multiple servers can share storage space and , if the servers need additional space, they can draw on the SAN for space, sharing the data  between them.

The primary purpose of a SAN is the transfer of data between computer systems and storage elements. SANs are sometimes also used for system interconnection in clusters.  A SAN consists of a communication infrastructure, which provides physical connections, and a management layer, which organizes the connections, storage elements, and computer systems so that data transfer is secure and robust. A SAN can also be a storage system consisting of storage elements, storage devices, computer systems, and/or appliances, plus all control software, communicating over a network.

SANs are extremely effective when used in conjunction with virtualization and blade servers. The combination allows for easy consolidation of servers, simplification of the IT infrastructure, information lifecycle management, and strong business continuity. It also supports a green technology approach — both green as in the environment, and green as in saving you cash.
